Anyone know a good breed of chicken for a urban house?

I need them to be quiet and would be nice to have them for meat and eggs.

Any suggestions?

I am a bit of a chook convert now Zman and I can suggest some birds for both meat and eggs. The Australorps are good and produce a smell/ medium sized egg and have good bodies for meat. I really like the silver laced wyandottes as pictured above and the gold laced wyandotte is anothe, we have a pair of them at the shop now for breeding and a handsome rooster.
Isa browns and Hilines are good layers but bony and not much meat on them. they'd make a good addition to the pen though.

I like the isa browns. They average about 300 eggs a year each. I gave mine full run of the back yard for over a month now. They have cleaned up a lot. Now only if i could find out where they are laying there eggs.

I would agree with Faye and say Australorps. They are a good dual purpose bird-good meat and eggs. We are getting almost an egg each day from each hen, and one has just sat very well on eggs and produced chicks....
They weren't that easy to get here in Perth mind you!

The gold lace wyandottes are pretty, have just hatched 16 chicks, between two hens and have been leading the egg laying race prior to hatching. Good for meat but have sold them before getting to that age.

We still have some for sale as well as Australorps of a couple of different ages. Soon to go the slaughterhouse as they are eating size and it is cheaper than feeding them. I don't plan to ever buy a shop chicken again, ever.
