Hiya So I have a few chooks at home and I want to use their poop to give my veggie patch a boost. I'm under the impression that putting it straight on the mulch will burn the plants, is that right? What do I need to do to make the best use of it? Compost? Soak in water? Really clueless here Thanks ! |

Chook poo can burn plants so like Jaymie said composting is a good idea. I only clean out the bottom of my chicken coop a couple of times a year so it is mostly prertty old and hard by the time I put it on the garden so I just spread it out on top of the mulch so it is slowly released down into the soil when it is broken down by the rain. |

If you have chicken coop with an open floor, consider letting the chooks do all the work for you. By this I mean raise the chicken coop on 150mm of timber (to form a sort of sandpit) and then fill the sandpit with straw, grass clippings, leaves or any other dry material you have around. Put the chicken coop over the sandpit and let the chooks poop on the material and scratch it in themselves. It basically composts whilst the chickens are living on top, and by letting them dig the poop in it cuts down smells almost completely. We have chickens in the inner west of Sydney and use this method. Twice a year I move the coop, dig out the sandpit and chuck it on the garden. In goes fresh lawn clippings (from Nana's house), leaves from the front yard and some sugar cane mulch. Works for me! |
