I should go check on how they are going.

5 wheelbarrow loads of grass pulled out by hand and then the roots dug out. :whip: 100 more elephant garlic planted. Now to make room for the next lot. Potatoes are just making there way out of the ground.

Last of the garlic planted today, 200ish. Also put the red shallots in and removed all the cana from the raised bed next to the house. Was going to plant it up but have decided to build it up. Going to add some fert, mulch and fish poo. Then I have a spare area if I find something interesting to plant instead of finding something to plant and having to find a place for it.

Can use the tops in stir fry. Also used as a small onion, good for baking. And my favorite is pickled. Can pickle them in the same jar with garlic and girkins for using on biscuits with cheese.

Going to plant some globe artichokes and a rhubarbe today. Ordered a couple of ornamental rhubarbe as well. Don't think you can eat them but man they grow huge. :shock2:

The crunchy fried onion they put all over Indonesian and Malaysian food is made from those shallots too !

Duff, I'm jealous of the amount of time you have available - fantastic effort, you're getting a hell of a lot done.

Work 7 days a week running a shop. Thats why I like gardening, all you have to do is throw a few seeds in and they take care of them selves. Secret is to try and do something small every day.

My Gunnera plants arrived today. One I planted into the AP system. :D The other I re-pottted into worm castings. It will go in the dirt later.

Ordered some soil blockers today to make rasing seedings and transplanting easier. Had to get them from the UK. The place has some nice toys.
http://www.blackberrylane.co.uk/ladbrooke.html

Will plant all seeds for the AP system into 20mm worm castings blocks so they can go straight into the AP system without cleaning the roots or trying to get rid of the styrofoam bits they seem to mix in with new seedlings. For the dirt I got a blocker that makes 40 & 100mm blocks. They are designed for one block to fit into the next size(20 into the 40, 40 into the 100) so you can upsize there root zone quickly. Something about roots not growing out the side into the air, so they tend to go down.

Trimmed more leaves off the tomato plant and there is a lot of tomatoes that were hiding. :shock2:

I was watching the Ooomalooma permaculture/aquaponics DVD the other week and he uses worm casting blocks for seeds, he shows how he makes them as well on the DVD, it was with a tool just like the ones you linked to..

(Ok it's not actually called Oomalooma, thats just how I say it and I can;t be bothered looking up the spelling ATM...

Saw it on the same DVD. Hope mine in on one of the planes that got out before they grounded the rest of em.

Been wanting a soil blocker for a while. I think the 20mm with castings would be good for the AP and up the block size for the soil garden.
