Plants are growing well in the wicking bed that gets plenty of sunlight

but not so well in the bed that's shaded. It will get more sunlight in winter, so will keep experimenting. I think strawberries may be worth a try in this bed.

Hi gnash
Water situation is a big worry atm :sad2: We have had well over 100mm, possibly 150mm (goats broke our rain guage). Some areas here have had 200mm (annual rainfall is around 300mm). The road at the front of our property went under yesterday and we are only just managing to control the water flowing onto our place. Main problem now is the irrigation drains are all full & many are overflowing and the forecast for tomorrow is possibly another 100mm. But considering what is happening in Qld, our problems seem insignificant :(

May have to change my climate information from "Mediterranean, low rainfall" to "Tropical, high rainfall"

Been getting a big bit in the last few hours EB
Completely lost control of the water coming onto our property at 1am this morning. Hubby has lived here all his life (51 years) and has never seen anything like it. I will post some pics later in the morning as it's still dark and i am going to try to get some sleep. Been up all night and Hubby has been out with the SES sandbagging homes and rescuing people from waterlogged cars.

Both our neighbours homes have water through them so i'm feeling sorry for them. Hubby is back out with the SES assisting others. We will be fine, guess the flood in November was a trial run

Hi Tristrin, glad to hear your ok. Sorry to hear about your neighbours. It may not be like Qld, but it still must be distressing. Have you had any reports about what might be coming down towards you? How close are you to the river?

Hi Naz
We are about 2km from the river, but we are not flooded directly by the river. It's from the rain, which can't get away quick enough, especially when the ground is already soaked. And then to add to the problem, the Lower Murray Water drains start overflowing as they can't handle any more water. In November our flood was caused by about 50mm falling in about 20 minutes, but that was nothing compared to this time. This was caused by about 300mm falling in around 3 days to some areas near us (not exactly sure what we got), plus the week before was warm and blockies were watering their vines, plus subsoil already moist from previous rains, equals disaster!!! Eventually all that water will drain into the Murray, but not sure how much effect that has on the overall height of the river. The Murray river height has more to do with rainfall above us and the Murrumbidgee inflows above us, and then the Darling inflows near you. Some people think that the Darling inflows have no effect upstream, but when they are significant they have the effect of causing upstream flows to slow, effectively raising the river upstream. Hope that makes sense :)

Oh man, that looks soooo bad.....

I can hardly comprehend that sort of situation as a person from W.A., we have nothing but sand, sand, sand for soil, so rainfall just disappears, if we ever get any rainfall...

Hope you don't get any more rainfall for a while... :sad2:
