Gosh, was the last update really January????? :blush:

Time flies!

Despite the Perth heat we have had a very productive garden this summer. This is largely due to the aquaponics system for most vegetables, but the pumpkin palace has (and still is) been fantastic. We have had so many vegetable spaghetti, butternuts and delicate pumpkins, as well as countless cucumbers. Growing them all up instead of on the ground has kept them clean, less likely to be nibbled by the rats, and taken up less than 3 square metres of ground- a lot less than if we had grown them all on the ground!!

The herbs have gone mad.....

and the bananas in the atrium area are rocketing up......

Not sure how they will go indoors over winter, but I imagine it will be better than outside in the wind!

Not all is growing well though....something keeps eating the peanut plants, the strawberries and the tomatoes....and caterpillars followed by thrips decimated the spring onions in the aquaponic system. The balance of nature I guess :dunno:

Thanks Charlie. Growing your own is very rewarding isn't it? I saw someones quote the other day...something like 'we come from the earth, we go back to the earth and in between we garden'....sorry I don't know who's it is but I think it sums it up!!

We have been getting into preserving some of the produce, which has been a very interesting experience! Some things have worked wonderfully.....and others not so :ohdear:

....like the oranges preserved in vodka..... :ahhh:

It is great fun though........but then we needed somewhere to store it all! Our kids have grown up and moved out, so we had a couple of spare rooms.........one of which we have converted into the 'produce room'. Now we have somewhere to keep all the beekeeping paraphernalia, food drier and sausage making gear, as well as jars of produce. A trestle table provides a workspace too! It is great not to have to squeeze everything into the kitchen!

Hi charlie…….time does fly!
Peasants garden is going well-especially now we have had some rain! It was struggling a bit in the heat of summer, plus we were having trouble keeping the dogs out of the raised beds (yes they are big, agile dogs!) especially if we added any manures etc….so….it has now all been fenced off and renourished!

The aquaponics system is great- we harvested a load of silver perch when it became cold and now have trout again…and they are growing, along with the veg…

The produce room has filled up since the last post- we had to add more shelves!! It is great to preserve what we grow, and it saves the freezer space for all the animal products (currently have fish, rabbit, duck, chicken and turkey in the freezer!)

We have had ongoing issues with rats :anger:

and have been working on our animal feeding systems and the feed shed to reduce the food available to them, and finally, this seems to have helped. We pretty much use pvc pipes cut in half lengthwise for all the animal feeders now. We have used this method for the sheep for years…..not sure why it took so long to realise it would also work for the turkeys and ducks :dunno:

It really reduces the spillage so less is wasted and less available for the rats!

The turkey feeder is up especially high to stop the ducks from eating their food too!

And the other main project we have had is to make a firefighting unit. We picked up an old trailer from the local dump, an ibc and a pump bought on line and dadaaaa…a firefighting unit that can be towed by the tractor to anywhere on the property. :clap:

We just need to be home when there is a fire……...

Peasants that’s a truly great set up you have there. I’m just in the process of starting my own set up. I have 16 acres in Mundijong so not too far from you. I have some Dorper sheep and a small aquaponics set up and starting to look at some chooks. I get so many ideas from reading this website it is a great resource.

how's it all looking coming into summer?

Hi KK75, thanks for your comments! We are looking surprisingly ok for having such hot weather! The fire fighting unit has come in handy this year, with a small fire on the block caused by lightening! It is all a bit dry, but otherwise going well- lots of wildlife which is always a good sign! I bet 16 acres keeps you busy!

Hi guys, wondering if there is anything special inside your worm farm bath? Ive started constructing one myself and wondering what you have done inside or is there just a grate over the drain or something like that.
