I saw Tino on Gardening Australia last weekend say that the laterals should be cut off. This gives fewer but fatter, juicier cobs.

I cut the laterals off. The gb's at waist height helps.

I had one good crop of corn last year, but my second did not grow well and was then eaten by birds or rats.

Spured on by the success of the first crop last year, it was one of the first things I planted this spring. I planted one bed, about 45 plants in three rows. I also sowed pigeon pea as a cover crop. The corn is doing well (should take a picture). I should have planted the pigeon pea a bit more densely as I am still getting lots of weeds between the corn. Also the pigeon pea has rust, which I have found it is susceptable to. The new leaves don't seem to have the rust, so perhaps they will go okay.

I can't remember when I planted the corn. but I reckon it was probably a good 6 weeks back. I really should get another bed in now I guess.

Corn is about to flower. Put a second bed in about 2 weeks back, but in this one the germination rate has been poor so far. Crossing fingers that the plants are about to pop through the soil.

You may be able to see that I have underplanted the corn with cow pea - which is a nitrogen fixing legume.
