Yep - let them out daily and hope they go back. Had to put some more fences up to restrict their movement recently because they decided that going over the road was a good idea. Probably about a quarter of the pumpkin vine has found its way into my veggie area, which is protected from the chooks by a fence. So I will get some pumpkins. Might have to fence off the whole vine next year.

Or grow them up a fence away from the chooks.

My pumpkin a few years back grew up over the mulberry tree, the apple tree and into the avo tree.... It's great when pumpkins hand down from the trees...

Jap pumpkins are almost ready. You have to wait for the skin to go smokey and a frost is good also. Theres probably 30 that I can see.

Next season I'm putting in 20+ plants in the next block. Should get 9tonne of pumpkins.

Food gardens guerrilla style.....

Since watching a video a few years ago I've wanted to make some seedballs and go grenading some vacant blocks around the burbs.. Perhaps this winter might be a good time to put it into action.

They do a little guerrilla gardening around here. Was told that the police noticed the new plants in the stations front garden when they started to flower. :hello:

I remember seeding the local sarg's garden many moons ago with Jamaican tomato's :lol:

I think some locals actually got to harvest a little before the word got around and he pulled them out, as far as we know he had NFI what they were until word was out on the bush telegraph 8-)

We might have to collect up some of our old seed packets here that are getting close to out of date, bit of heavy clay soil from the soil yard next door..... Nice.... grenading runs..

Use some worm castings around the seed to get a better germination.

Did get inspired by your guerilla gardening posts - went into the vacant block next door and spread a few seeds around. Beans, peas, etc. Definitely gunna be putting some pumpkin and melon seeds in there in in spring !!!

Re guerilla gardening
Next time you go fishing bring some seeds or seedlings and plant them at you fishing spot. A few ginger leaves and herbs on hand for next fishing trip so you can cook a few fish. I'm going to be germinating paw paw seeds soon and was thinking of transplanting the ones I don't need under some shade beside a dam.

What do you do with 30 Jap Pumpkins my neighbour has heaps he has given me 2
l have roasted one for soup and in little cubes for a blue cheese, pine nut and pumpkin quiche.

Been giving them away, eating a few, chooks are eating some and even the dog has eaten a few.
I have the next lot of japs just germinating now. 20+ plants, be interesting to see how much of the next block they will take over. :shock2:

Same amount of water melons going in as well. :rock:
