The peanuts in the photo were only those from the sucker roots put down by the flowers, I didn't know they also produce peanuts from the roots of the original plant, but it makes sense when you think about it  .

I pulled the whole plant which had started to die in the cold and with the peanuts discovered in the roots I tripled my yield of peanuts for the season :joy:

This makes them much more productive then I thought and assuming I can get a high germination rate next season they may actually be worth cultivating.

At a guestimate I would say 50 productive plants would produce enough peanuts for a few good satays throughout the year with enough left over for replanting.

I was thinking about planting them in the hollows between rows of corn to add nitrogen to the soil and act as a living mulch.

While they are good roasted, I like them better boiled. Most people just boil them in a brine but they are excellent boiled in a spicy seafood boil mix, like for crawfish or shrimp. They can even be frozen in the water they were boiled in ziplock freezer bags. Just need to let them soak for 2 hours after boiling with somthing to hold them down under the water to fill the inside of the shells with the spicy water. Eat them hot/warm, Awsome!

Really ? Never heard of it. Want to try it now that I have though. Thanks Bill

I've stopped at the peanut van and bought a bag or two

Boiled Peanuts Not Only Taste Great!
November 2, 2007 - That great Queensland delicacy, boiled peanuts, not only taste great, it seems they could also protect against some illnesses!

Research in the United States has shown that boiling peanuts brings out up to four times more of the antioxidant phytochemicals in the nuts that have been shown to protect cells against the risk of degenerative diseases, including cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

"Boiling is a better method of preparing peanuts in order to preserve these phytochemicals," said Lloyd Walker from Alabama A&M University's Department of Food and Animal Sciences.

The research has been published in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
