G'Day Gang,

Just pulled our Jerusalem artichokes today. :D

What a surprise. I pulled the first plant and was impressed with the amount of tubers that came out with the root ball. I then had a dig around and was doubley surprised at how many tubers were still in the ground. These 2 plants were only put in about 8-10 weeks ago.

Just a side note: We don't have anywhere near the bug damage in the garden this year. I think our ecosystem is starting to settle into a good balance.

Cheers
Dennis

What are they like to eat. I've not come accross any in the shops. And forget about them untill they are out of season and you can't find them online.

Yep, thats what Jerusalem Artichokes look like... Closely related to the sunflower, grow like a weed in poor soil with little water and the tubers are beautiful and sweet... I love em, but some people don;t because they have problems with the :fart: side of things.... :D

Quote for 17th Century Botanist John Goodyer regarding Jerusalem Artichokes:

"But in my judgement, which way soever they be drest and eaten they stir up and cause a filthie loathesome stinking winde with the bodie, thereby causing the belly to bee much pained and tormented, and are a meat more fit for swine, than men." :fart:

Can't really tell if :fart: are more or less. I can still run a small :fart: powered turbine so unless I get scientific and start blowing up balloons the jury is still out.
