Hi Guys and Gals,

Has anyone here tried the method of making liquid fertilizer that is described in the BYF website and magazine? Liquid Fertilizer Article

If so, here are some questions if I may -

What exactly is a burlap bag and if I can't get one what could I substitute if for?

Is anyone a die hard fan of this fertilizer and what plants (veggies) are most successful with it?

I have three chickens and a rabbit and prefer to make the tea than make a composting area.

Ideally I would love to use the tea in an aquaponic/hydroponic set up but the word over in the BYAP forum is so anti-manure/urine (due to pathogens or bacteria going into the food) that my head is kind of rattled.

Even humble Goldfish here are very pricey!

I'm guessing a hessian bag, seed and fertilizer came in them years ago before the plastic weave bags






I like the compost personally but you need not make a specific area, just throw the wastes etc direct into the garden (buried), my Dad has been doing it for years with good results or use a compost tumbler etc to save on space.



Any chance of just going out and catching fish

I have done it in a different way but never actually measured it's success compared to other fertilisers, from observations it does appear to work. I never used the bag, just wacked a heap of vegetative material and some horse manure in a big bucket, filled it with water and left it for a week or so. The resulting liquid stink (my rule of thumb is that if it stinks it must be good for the garden) gets diluted in a watering can and watered around, stinky plant material and manure gets tipped into my compost.

I would never put it in an aquaponics system but could see no reason why you could not cycle it thorugh a system that had no fish in it basically running the system as a hydroponics system but using nutrients gained from composted materials rather than purchased hydroponic chemicals. I think you would need to wtach for nutrient deficiencies though.

I usually brew the tea. An air stone will get the bacteria working to break everything down.
