Thankyou very, very much. I don't think it is perfection, I just show you the good photos. lol.
There are certainly areas that are not performing as well as I would like, but I feel that now we have overcome some of the big jobs we are on a roll and it can only get better. Thinking it could one day be ready for another open garden. Renovating a house and garden of this age and size is both timely and can be costly, but I can't call it work because I enjoy doing it.
The sun is just coming up here and I always love the day after a big event because the property is soo neat and tidy and is filled with an energy and good vibes from the day before. There is always the other side as well, I can start picking my veges, cause it is not a display anymore :thumb: Oh well off to the garden with the camera

We are very, very pleased at how well the plants are doing in the raised vege bed growing in the mushroom compost. Well worth the effort, just got to finish the retic and plant more stuff.

The maximum security chicken pen is almost complete. While most people are after the Easter bunnies will be on the lookout for Easter chickens. I would like to try meat birds as well as egg layers and good scratchers. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Want them to look pretty too- always a bonus.

Australorps are a good all round Australian meat and egg bird, handle the heat really well, common enough to be easily obtained and are too fat to fly or even squeeze through most rural stock fencing so they are easy to contain.

Try:

Might want to think about netting for the top of the chook run, Bastard crows :anger: will learn that there are eggs in there and start nicking them before you can get them.

Thanks for that Simo, and yes we are planning to bird net the top as we also have birds of prey such as the whistling kite and eagles.

Someone was playing hide and seek today, but I found him
Thought it was interesting the way he was clinging to the pool gate with his legs dangling down, big legs too, I tucked them up for him on the second photo, thinking it was a neater look.

second all that Simo says and would suggest the wyandottes - gold or silver laced are very pretty. they are not a small bird and not a large bird but they are definitely large enough to roast even the boys. Their egg production is more than adequate especially if you plan on using some for meat.

Is the chook in the banner a silver laced wyandotte?

Bonnie the kelpie watches on as the new inhabitant get acquainted with their new home, she loves chooks and does them no harm, but we didn't want to shock them, so she watched from outside Alcatraz.

Well today was the day, after phoning around to see who had what, we took a country drive up to the hills near Toodyay, we came home with three Australorp 16 week old hens and from another undisclosed location came Donald and Daisy! She has a lot to say for herself and he is the quieter male.
Thanks to the advise of forum members we decided on the Australorps for both meat and eggs. I think we will get a rooster in the future. It is not easy to get exactly what you want at this time of year, as it appears. I have my name down for some Silver and Gold Lace Wyandottes.
It is likely that Daisy could start laying soon and that we may even get some future offspring, Laura was disappointed that we didn't come home with a cute duckling today, but we still have winter ahead of us and they smelt bad even just on the way home, so no house ducks please.
The pekins are fast growing and good also fo the table, though the children are actually having a difficult time eating fish and soon to be chickens and ducks, so I think we left the training too late. Luckily we can't keep cows and sheep here. :sad2:

Lovely Faye! Pekins are gorgeous! After years of having geese, we switched to Pekins and are very pleased with them. Good luck with the breeding!

Just did a wine tour, oops I mean garden tour with the Peasants! Showed off Alcatraz, Mac said "I love Eddys angles" they are so square
Deb and I went to train the girls to roost, (it was dark and raining a little) but they were there already, smart cookies. Donald and Daisy were outside of the shelter. The rain, like water off a ducks back, they din't care and were soaking up the moonlight and wet weather.

Hey Faye,

I know you say your dog like's chooks so the ducks should be ok but thats not always true.

Our dog Jack leaves our chooks alone but is responsible for the the death of 4 of our ducks.
