Woohoo! Today is the beginning of the incubation period. We have received 60 eggs in the mail and are embarking on 14 days of egg turning, starting now.

The eggs came packed in sawdust.

Each egg looked very unqiue and was wrapped delicately in a piece of tissue paper. We lost only 3 out of the 60 that were sent due to cracking.

they have all been marked with an O and an X so that we can turn them accordingly.

The incubator has been set and water added for humidity, fingers crossed we are doing it right. Should have quails available in Spring :)

How exciting! Did you buy the incubator? I have been interested in getting one but would prefer the automatic one that turns the eggs.....

Cool, I would be interested in buying a few quail off you if you ever get to the point that you want to sell some Faye?

Yes I did, it was an impulse buy when I went to pick up some australorp chicks. We had been looking at them for a little while and the lady that breeds the chooks sells them as well.
Today is day 9 and we have been turning the eggs twice a day.

Can't count the chicks before they hatch
We may be able to come to some arrangement there Simo. Hopefully things might start to happen next weekend. It is quite funny, when you turn the eggs the idea is to have the pointy end slightly raised, but some of these are tip heavy and try to roll away, and crash in to the other eggs. I don't know if that is a good sign or not.
Joel and Peter started building the multi layered housing yesterday, apparently each of the 4 levels can support 70 quails :thunbs: Off to get some pics :)

Does the floor stay like that Faye. I can't quite see what is on the weldmesh on the floor - is there are finer wire? Looks a bit hard on the feet.

Are you guys going to breed them, eat them, use females for eggs or all of the above?

The heavy mesh is for structure only and it's covered in 10mm mesh on the base.. Pretty much built to standard recommendations for wire gauges heights etc... But I don't think we'll be stocking to high recommendations, we'll be fairly lightly stocked..

We'll probably be going for a combination of meat/breeding/eggs, with a total of 8 cages in the tower and a couple of other separate ones we have, there will be heaps of space.

Will probably have a meeting tonight about the naming rights to the multi layered accomodation
In the meantime the days are approaching hatching time :) (All going to plan)
Yesterday was day 14 which marks the last day of turning. Joel carefully cut some noice green hessian so that when we have 100% hatch rate  they won't get their little feet stuck down between the plastic grid. We also added more water to the outer moat in the bottom of the incubator, this keeps the humidity high and should aid the hatching process. (Fingers crossed)
Well now, the lid is on and cannot be removed until maybe day 17. We are listening out for the sounds of chirping and or eggs cracking :dunno:

Yesterday we were supposed to candle the eggs, and remove any with cracks but after holding the tiny eggs up to the light and seeing nothing other than an egg, decided that it was just better to turn them for the last time and get the lid back on. This really is a lot of trial and error. Hope something happens soon, it is a tense wait after twice daily egg turning for 14 days.
Egg turning involves fine motor skills and if you don't have a good grip the eggs drop and cascade like bowling balls in to the others. They are getting their own personalities, even as eggs.
The other day I tried to set them down with the pointy end up. Funnily enough there was a point of balance that was opposite to what I was trying to achieve, and the egg suddenly, up and somersaulted away. I sat there laughing to myself. The mega development continues as pictured below.
