Well done Duff. I planted my second bed of garlic about 2 weeks after the first. For the second bed I used 2009 season stock only, while for the first bed I used quite a bit of 2008 stock. Result has been that I only have about 70% hit rate from the first bed at this stage. while in the second bed over 90% are up. I expect that I'll get some more coming up gradually in the first bed, but I will soon need to mulch to keep the weeds at bay, after which I will not get any more shoots finding their way through.. Will consider putting another small bed in if I can find somewhere suitable, though it will be going in later than I'd like.

Hi All

I planted my garlic on the shortest day. First time i have ever planted garlic and it was the white one. All cloves have popped up and appears to growing well.
How long does it take and how do you store garlic for longevity?

Good stuff Duff, mine about half the size but put it down to the frosts we have had, I am growing the wild stuff I mentioned earlier in the thread, NFI how long it takes, may try some in AP see if it gets rid of the aphids

Checked some of my garlic and I reckon its ready to pull up.
Even though some of the plants had a lot smaller leaf growth than last year the bulbs are good size.
Might leave it in a few more weeks but stop watering it. This year I kept some home grown bulbs in the fridge and was only without home grown garlic for about 2 months.
Once you've had the home grown stuff you'd never buy the cheap Chinese garlic again.

Just noticed how good this site is as a record of what youve done in the garden at times.
Looks like I pulled out my garlic in late september.
So after 5 months of sitting/hanging in the shed its still in really great condition.
A few days ago I moved it all to a vegetable drawer in the shed fridge.
My theory is get it into constant temperature storage before we start getting cool nights and this should keep it good for longer by stopping it from sprouting.
Only trouble with this is it will sprout after a week once you remove it from the fridge but only remove what you need. Wondering if I can keep it good till my next crop is ready?
Last year I put it in the fridge as soon as I saw some sprouting, this year I got in earlier.

Pulled my garlic this morning. Was hoping to leave it in a little longer, but saw it was going to rain so bit the bullet. I only put in one bed this year (one of my round corregated iron beds), but because I got it on at the right time and the soil was good (a lot of compost), I got a decent crop with many of the bulbs being bigger than I have ever managed before. Will take a picture on the weekend if I get a chance. The smeall is fantastic. I took 5 bulbs to work this morning straight after I'd pulled them to tease work colleagues with (I handed them over - but the tease is that they will then realise what real garlic is like as they go back to their crap chinese stuff). By the time I gave them away this arv, my office smelt so strongly of garlic people must have thought I was bathing in the stuff LOL.

I've always pulled my galic when the leaves start to yellow, obviously has to be well grown, not sick.
Also, go easy on the water in the later period of growth.

Good read, this thread. Good information. Awaiting ghoul/demon day (Halloween) to plant my garlic and onions. By then I should have another wooden raised bed made and filled.

LOL. Smaller crop this year Jaymie as I only managed to get one bed in (I normally do 2). The size of the bulbs is better this year though because I planted in godd rich composty soil.
