:thunbs:  :joy: :talk:
The quails are now 12 weeks old and we got our first egg!
We also have a clucky chook that continues to want to sit on eggs, even though we know that they are not fertilised. I ever so gently snuk the quail egg under her, we will see if anything comes of it.

Would you be wanting Gnash?
They are currently up to 2 eggs per day, which means we have at least 2 females and the rest are possibly males :sad2: I am thinking we may have to collect the eggs for the next week and then incubate them and perhaps increase our stock, we barely have enough to fill Quailtry Towers at the moment. I guess we may eat the males, still having trouble telling the difference though!

Don't the females have a raised vent? blow on its bum and have a look

I will be wanting in the future but have that many projects happening I haven't got time to build homes for them yet...I still have to build rabbit homes, finish the new duck/chookpen and fill 3 more water tanks for gardens  there really isn't enough hours in the day

Is there anyone interested in trying their hand at farming quails? The novelty has worn off and they are no longer our cup of tea. Please register your interest now. We have 2 females laying eggs, 8 males, I think and another dozen babies with more due out of the incubator. They are not proving to be worth the effort so let us know if you would like to give some a good home?

I'm intersted in the adults, can't take the hatchlings just yet as I am not set up for them yet.

Hi Ccbear, would you like me to put that on Joels to do list!!!
It was quite a job to build, and cost an arm and a leg. We abandoned the idea as we found them to be extremely wasteful with their food and time consuming for the return that we got.

In comparison to the chickens or more the point roosters, which are destined to go the butchery Friday and returned dressed (more the point undressed and oven ready) for only $2-70 each. :thumb:

It was a fun process breeding and hatching them and we certainly learnt a lot. If I was you I'd give it a go first before building the infrastructure. It just wasn't for us.
We have done well with the rabbits and thank Deb and Mac for the introduction and the breeding stock, loved growing them, breeding them, looking after them and eating them too.

I'll alert Joel as to your request, he was the designer :poke:
Sorry he's gone fishing. :sad2:

Hi Faye no problems may be a good one to feature in a upcoming edition of the magazine. Would love to do Rabbits but a $30,000 fine per rabbit in Queensland turns me off the idea. Would love to hear updates on your rabbits including the breeding.

Thanks.

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting into Quails. Can anyone tell me, are the Coturnix and Japanese Quail the same thing. I was confused, now I'm not sure!
Any light on this subject would be a great help
Also, anyone from Western Australia here?
Cheers

Mmm we had a go with the quails, chickens seem easier than them and rabbits were great value too. Cute and cuddly, grew easily once they had all their wire upgraded and when you are set up for it. there is a thread here about the rabbits somewhere.

We have had the standard quails for years, 1 male and 2 females. Just cant get them to breed. Not sure what we are doing wrong. 1 of the females has layed heaps of eggs over the years but nothing seems to come of it.

We have put it down to mice so far.

I don't think quail go broody very often, probably had it bred out of them over the years, when I get more quails I will get some silky hens to incubate them.
