I've had asparagus in for about 3 years now and last season the plants got a lot bigger.
I've heard you can dig them up and divide the crowns to get an even better harvest.
What I want to know is... Can I do it now?
At the moment thay still have a lot of green growth that hasnt died off although some has started yellowing.
The last thing I want to do is kill them after growing them for 3 years.
Any advice appreciated.

I think they divide then when all the plant has died off. Did you plant from seed or crown. A three year grown is when they start to produce a good crop. You may be dividing a little early. I put in 2 yr old crowns last year and didn't cut any for this season so next years crop should be good.

When I bought them they were small plants in a pot.
Got a fairly good feed from them last season but at the end of last season when I let them grow without picking they went off and now I have quite a big clump of growth.
Hoping if I divide them that I will get twice the feed?? Maybe leave it till the middle of July??

Yep. Now is a good time to replant asparagus. I'm about to do so with some. If they are starting to yellow, they've sent most of their nutrients back into the roots so it's a good time to cut off the tops and lift them. If you leave it another month or so, they could have started to shoot for next season and you risk losing that crop. Especially as w'ere told it could be a warm, dry winter.

Oh - mine have been in a large bed for 5 years now - am I doing anything wrong if I just let 'em keep going that way ?

No! It's best to leave them alone - they'll produce for 20 or so years. The ones I'm transplanting are from a friend who has more than he can use.

I planted some of the purple ones from seed. They will take a while before they produce.

Can anyone suggest a good supplier of crowns in Perth, I have not checked Wandilla and Dawsons yet but will do so this week, if anyone already knows someone who definitely has some it would be apprecieated. I need a half a dozen for the garden at school and want to get them in next week when we return.

Unfortunately you can't get plants sent to WA because of our quarantine so I need to find some locally.
